Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon highly active yeast
  • 5 tablespoons granulated sugar (divided)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1/4 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 2 to 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (or more as needed)
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter (at room temperature)
  • 1/4 cup salted butter (at room temperature)
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water and yeast; let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix in melted butter, warm milk, and granulated sugar.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, light brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and salt.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to the yeast mixture until combined; adjust flour as needed to form a non-sticky dough.
  5. Knead dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  6. Roll out into a rectangle (¼ inch thick) and spread softened butter over the top.
  7. Sprinkle remaining sugar and cinnamon evenly on top before rolling tightly into a log shape.
  8. Cut into 8 equal pieces and place on a lined baking sheet.
  9. Let rise while preheating the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for about 20 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Prepare frosting by mixing room-temperature butter with powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth.
  11. Frost slightly cooled rolls before serving.
